In his 1966 interview with David Sylvester, Francis Bacon discusses criticism and friendship between artists. The first time I read this interview a few years ago, I completely identified with Bacon’s words; they perfectly described what I’d always felt, but had never articulated: that the most successful artists are those who constantly search for peers to destroy their complacency and force them to grow.
